Any non-Bahamian who desires to work in The Bahamas for a period ranging from 1 to 90 days must apply to the Department of Immigration for a Short Term Work Permit. The application should be submitted before the prospective employee arrives in The Bahamas.
Short-term work permits are meant for emergencies only and should be a one-time application. For example:
- Aircraft Mechanic: An aircraft mechanic coming to effect a repair to an airplane or equipment not exceeding two (2) weeks.
- Auditors, Inspectors, and other Officers: Auditors, Inspectors, and other Officers coming from a corporation’s headquarters outside The Bahamas for a stay of not more than three (3) or four (4) weeks in The Bahamas.
An exception to this rule is the case of a Travelling Salesman for a period not exceeding one (1) week. If it is the intention to employ the individual for a period longer than 30 days, the application should be accompanied by all the relevant documents. If the company feels that they have a case that warrants temporary permission, this case must be made in the letter of request for the long-term application, or in a subsequent letter, if there is an urgency to get the person in place on short notice.
Further exceptions are where persons are coming to attend a Board of Director’s meeting, a Disaster Preparedness meeting, or those that are a part of the Trusted Traveller Programme (TTP). The company is required to notify the Director of Immigration, in writing, at least two (2) days prior to these persons coming to The Bahamas, also providing details of the expected dates of the trip and the airline information. A copy of the biographical data page of the individual’s passports should also be submitted.
